When Stan Lee passed away this week at the age of 95, he left behind a towering legacy. As one of the earliest driving forces at Marvel Comics, he was responsible for countless classic comic books, and their related movies, TV shows, and merchandising. All to the tune of billions of dollars in revenue.

Like no comic creator before him, he became a celebrity in his own right, making frequent appearances in those comics, movies and shows. He showed up as himself, and as a slightly exaggerated version of himself, and as other characters fictional and real (Hugh Hefner in Iron Man!) He could be simultaneously self-deprecating and slightly pompous, always on brand, but always engaging.

And like any great character, he also was recreated in miniature collectible form, several times over.

stan lee simpsons

stan lee hot toysStan Lee appeared as himself on an episode of The Simpsons, or at least a slightly pompous overly confident version of himself. As such, he was immortalized as a yellow action figure. Lee was actually an easy person to caricature, because he had a distinct look and fashion sense, and that look basically didn’t change much over the last 40 years of his life.

Hot Toys created a hyper-realistic 12-inch figure of Lee, complete with director’s chair (right). You can almost hear him promoting his next film as you gaze upon the incredibly real textures.

Funko has had lots of fun with Lee, in several guises. The most prevalent would be his Pop! figures, representing just about every MCU cameo he’s ever made. And a few versions wearing a superhero outfit complete with cape. Throw in several versions created just for individual conventions and events (he’s usually tearing his shirt open to show the event logo), and there are at about 30 different variants to collect.

stan lee pops

He also shows up in the Funko Vinyl Idolz series, as a tall, bug-eyed version of his normal self. And as a Dorbz character, a short, round, close-eyed variant. Just to cover all the bases.

stan lee funko pez

Finally, being a man of great taste, Lee even became a Pez dispenser just a few months before he died. As someone who dispensed of colorful comics and films over the years, it seems like a fitting final appearance.

Excelsior!

In the spirit of Halloween, let’s take a look at some Pop! Characters who decided to dress up in costume. First of all, no, not like Batman. Sure, that’s Bruce Wayne in a Batman suit, so technically, it’s a costume. But, here we’re talking about characters dressed somewhat unexpectedly as someone or something else, even if they’re already in costume. Unless we’re making an exception.

Speaking of exceptions, maybe Batman can count, now that we think about it. And Batgirl. Both can be seen in their familiar Batsuits, except in the color scheme of Harley Quinn. And why is this? It’s part of the Impopsters series, which features Batman and company in the liveries of various villains. And why is this? It’s the world of Pop!, don’t ask.

Remember how we said we weren’t going to include superheroes who weren’t dressed as someone else? The Coon & Friends gang from South Park are okay here because they aren’t really superheroes with actual powers. So they’re just running around in costumes. Except for maybe Mint Berry Crunch. And possibly Mysterion. But their identity remains safe with us. Besides, spoilers and all…

Several Disney/Pixar characters fit the costume theme, at least a couple of them from actual appearances in films. Finnick from Zootopia looks adorable in his elephant jammies, which aren’t really a costume, right? Well, since he’s actually an adult fox pretending to be a kid, yeah, it counts. In Coco, Miguel appears throughout much of the movie in Day of the Dead inspired makeup to fit in with the underworld. Day of the Dead, Halloween… it’s all good this time of year. And since Star Wars is now part of the Disney universe, let’s count Finn, who’s not a real Stromtrooper, but dresses like one when needed.

Can a work outfit count as a costume? It does when it’s Beefsquatch! Gene Belcher from Bob’s Burgers frequently wears a sandwich board (or is that a burger board?), but on occasion, adds extra toppings with a Sasquatch mask. Beeeeefsquaaaaatch!

It’s not all cartoon characters, either. For example, you’d expect to see Ralphie from A Christmas Story immortalized as a Pop! figure in his bunny pajamas. (Even though we just declared jammies aren’t really a costume). But how about as a wild west sheriff, a costume change that only happened in his dreams? Yeah, that works.

On the other end of the not-a-cartoon spectrum, consider the Daleks from Doctor Who. As it turns out, Dalek Sec is a Cthulhu-like cycloptic creature in a dapper suit, who sits inside the robot casing. And yes, he/it is available in Pop! form.

Can a costume be involuntary? Rick Sanchez, from Rick and Morty is available as a Pop! figure with a facehugger from Alien stuck to his face. Oddly enough, it’s noncanonical as far as the TV show goes, but somehow it all makes sense.

Of course the all-time champion of cross-character-dressing has to be Deadpool. There’s hardly a character or person or trope or idea that can’t be mixed in with Deadpool’s very meta-identity. You can find him as a chicken, a cheerleader, a chimichanga enthusiast… but the best of all has to be as TV painting instructor Bob Ross. And that last one is actually based on a NSFW trailer for the second movie, so it has some basis in reality.

There are some Pop! figures for whom it’s hard to determine which character is wearing which. Freddy Funko has been reimagined in quite a few forms over the years, but what about his mashup with Pennywise, the clown from IT? Is that Freddy in Penny makeup, or Mr. Wise wearing Mr. Funko’s clothes?

Either way, have a safe and fun Halloween, whether you dress as Pennywise, or Deadpool, or Deadpool as Pennywise, or…

Close your eyes for a moment and think about what a Funko Pop! figure looks like: Kind of squarish, marshmallow-shaped head, tiny body that can barely support that head, no mouth to speak of, and a pair of beady, circular, black eyes.

funko pop big boy
What big, round, black eyes you have, Big Boy!

Now, open your eyes to this: There are quite a few Pop! figures that bend those rules in different ways, but the most disruptive is via the eyes.

If you’ve ever painted or drawn a caricature of someone, you realize that the eyes are extremely important to the unique look of a person. By limiting designers to round black pupils, other cues become much more crucial to making the figure recognizable. Here are some Pop! figures whose eyes don’t quite look the same as the rest.

This list is by no means exhaustive…. It doesn’t include transparent “invisible” or single color figures, or similar variants. Also, characters whose eyes are hidden behind a mask or goggles are generally not on this list. There are lots of sci-fi monsters, aliens, and robots included here.

Different Colors

funko pop reptar

Reptar, the star of TV and commercials within the “Rugrats” world gets vivid red lizard eyes. The Basilisk, the giant snake monster from the “Harry Potter” universe has shiny gold eyes. The Lizard, a giant humanoid lizard from Marvel, has yellowy eyes. And while you may remember the green slimy creatures on “Land of the Lost” having big black eyes, their more evolved leader, Enik, the Golden Sleestak, had red orbs. Reptiles should always have colorful eyes.

funko pop pennywise

Billy, the charming puppet from the “Saw” movies kind of requires those crazed red eye rings to offset his other delicate features. Pennywise, that cuddly clown from “IT,” actually has different colored eyes depending on which figure you choose.

funko pop five nights at freedys

If you’ve ever played “Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ you may have noticed that black eyes don’t show up well in the dark. So all of the Pop! characters from that game feature correctly hued eyeballs. Definitely scarier that way.

Robots

Many robots have humanoid proportions, so it makes sense that their designs have some sort of eye like device. Funko shows them several different ways.

funko pop bender

Eve, the sleek counterpart to Wall-E’s clunky analog boxiness, has a black screen with surprisingly expressive blue eyes, and her Pop! figure honors that look. Funko also uses different shapes and other tricks depending on her mood. Bender, from “Futurama,” has a black void around his eyes, so they had to go with white, and made them angry as well. (He really looks weird without a mouth, doesn’t he?) Data from “Star Trek: TNG” has gold eyes that somehow look more lifeless than regular beady black ones. And Geordi La Forge, from the same series, is not a robot, but his eyes are permanently hidden behind a robotic device, so why not mention him here?

funko pop mystery science theater

Crow T. Robot (“MST3K”) has correct yellow eyes with diamond pupils. His pal Tom Servo, as well as Robot B-9 (“Lost In Space”) both have has glass bulbs for heads, so they don’t really have eyes at all (as opposed to Benson from “Regular Show,” who has peepers on his gumball head).

Different Quantities

funko pop leela

Mike Wazowski from “Monsters Inc.” of course falls into the single eye category, but he is one of the few who shows white in his eye as well. That’s probably because a giant black eyeball would probably suck all the light out of the room. Turanga Leela (“Futurama”) of course, only has a single eye, but in her case, she looks annoyed, which is key to her character. Don’t forget, in the very first episode of the show, she identifies herself as “Agent 1-BDI” and then groans at the joke. Bill Cipher, the Illuminati pyramid character from Gravity Falls not only has a single eye (as most pyramids do), but there is a cosmic space version in which that eye is white. If you have to ask, you probably wouldn’t understand the show.

funko pop xenomorph

Of course, the Xenomorph (“Alien”) and Demogorgon (“Stranger Things”) have no eyes to speak of, although the Alien has some vestigial bumps where eyes could evolve. There is also a Pop! figure wearing an Alien Facehugger, which has no visible eyes and is really gross.

funko pop rick and morty

Going the other way, Rick and Morty generally fit the standard, but their alien counterparts have a third, different sized eye on their foreheads. Speaking of Rick, Morty, Facehuggers and Aliens, there is a version of Rick being hugged by one for some reason.

Different Shapes

funko pop napoleon dynamite

Further speaking of “Rick & Morty,” Summer Smith’s teenage petulance is nicely summed up by her sarcastic, downcast eyes. You can just feel the cold shoulder she’s giving the world. Napoleon Dynamite and his pal Pedro both feature half shut eyes that convey the understated slackadaisical tone of the movie.

funko pop popeyeAnd since we’re talking about Pop! eyes, how about, well, Popeye? He’s either missing one eye, or is permanently winking. Meanwhile, his other eye is closed partly from below, obscured by his cheek. Quite frankly, he’s such a strange looking character, you would have thought the spinach industry would beg the studio to stop showing him eating their product. But he would look stranger with two round black eyes, wouldn’t he?

There are many more that defy the main trend. What are some of your favorites? Let us know in the comments!

As Bender said best, we’re back, baby!

Whew. We needed some time for our Brain Spawn to wrap their minds around more than 150 new items announced in February by Funko at the 2018 New York City Toy Fair.

Raise your hand if you were just as pleasantly surprised as us by the addition of iconic movie Pops! such as “Coming to America,” “The Princess Bride,” and “It.” Perhaps it was the debut of Saturday Night Live characters, Rainbow Brite or the Ed Sheeran Pop! that had you thinking out loud.

Did we mention the SuperCute Plush Bob Ross?

The Brain Spawn have been busy updating our catalog with the latest Toy Fair releases and much more from the Funko galaxy. We’re always looking for your help. Let us know if you see any Pop! figures that somehow slipped by us and into a nearby black hole.

Set your faces to stunned. It’s going to be a busy 2018, beginning with a nod to this year’s Academy Award winners.
