We recently started adding Buyers’ Fees by Mercari and other Auction Houses. What about Shipping costs and Sales Tax?

The problem with them is that they are location-based. Say for example this Timpo Toy Eskimo –

I know what it would have cost me to get this shipped. But the buyer might have been in Australia and might have paid AU $5.00 shipping. For other price sources like auction houses we would not know if the buyer was in the room or bid over the phone and had the items sent to her or him. We just would not know the shipping cost for our Price Points.

Another issue is that the price guide is also for sellers to determine how much an item is worth when they list it. A seller could think that the sale price plus the shipping cost price is what they can sell it for. Then they would list it at too high a price and be unlikely to make a sale.

Then there is the additional complication: collectors in different parts of the world are willing to pay more than others. Belgian Hot Wheels collectors are willing to pay more for shipping than US collectors as they cannot get many models locally, folks in Hawaii are willing to pay more than others as everything has to be flown in, etc.

Same with sales tax and import duties. Seattle, Washington, charges 10.35%, Fairbanks, Alaska, charges 0% sales tax – so buyers in Seattle know to add around 10% and buyers in Alaska know there is no Sales Tax (but often higher shipping).

It would distort Estimated Values for all to add these extra costs (different to say Mercari’s 13% buyer-related cost that every buyer has to pay). Consider shipping, sales tax, or import duties as an additional cost that you have to pay on top of the Estimated Value (and yes, free shipping when offered does distort our pricing a little bit but there is nothing we can do about it).

So use this formula for your purchases –

And that makes it of course attractive to buy in a physical store (no shipping) or, even better, privately (if the seller is below her State’s sales-tax limit there is none of that either!).

It’s our mission at Pop Price Guide and our partner hobbyDB to not only be the most complete database in the collectibles universe, but also the most accurate.

We already have a diverse Price Point system that incorporates values beyond eBay, from the likes of Mercari, WhatNot, and assorted Auction Houses, for example (find all of the now 80 different Prices Sources we support here). This allows us to provide a more complete estimated value. All of which is vetted by our Squad of humans, rather than bots.

So we’re geeked up to announce our latest upgrade to PPG’s price system, one that comes requested directly from our community of collectors.

In the middle of the year, Mercari changed the process by which it charges. Instead of charging the Seller a fee, it now has a 10% Buyer’s Fee. Many sellers have adjusted their pricing to take into account the fact that they do not pay fees. And those that did not adjust, make fewer sales because their items are now 10% more expensive to buy!

As of yesterday, all prices on PPG and hobbyDB have been adjusted for the Buyer’s Fee. See an example here –

The Price Point will explain the fact that we added the Buyer’s Fee and how much it is (we bet Mercari will increase it soon).

Look for the same treatment for Auction Houses that charge Buyer’s fees soon. And if you want to add Price Points from a specific Auction House contact us!

With a database as large as Pop Price Guide and hobbyDB’s, there is bound to be an oversight, error or simply items that need to be updated here and there.

Nobody’s Gem Mint, after all.

We are, however, the only independent guide that doesn’t rely on automatic price assignments with all its flaws. And not only do we have more price points than anyone else, we’re the only guide where our Squad Members evaluate every price point, so that items such as fakes, not near mint and more do not negatively affect estimated value.

We understand that collectors rely on us to be the ultimate guide, so here’s our plan to stay that way –

To combat any errors found on database items, including price points, and to make Pop Price Guide as accurate as possible, we offer the ability for any member to “flag” any Database Item, Subject or Price Point on the site that they feel is incorrect.

Flagged items are sent to our Flag Squad, who verify the info and take any appropriate actions. The result is a cleaner and more efficient PPG.

To date, our team has handled more than 33,000 Flags, with more arriving every day. Plus, our amazing Squad in the last few weeks worked through the backlog and have brought our number of flags down to zero older than 1 day!

The New Flag System

Under the new Flag system, we’re targeting 95 percent of our Flags within the first 24 hours of their arrival (not including week-ends), followed by three days for the remaining 4 percent, in addition to the 1% of Flags that might require further inspection or code changes.

To accomplish this, we now have a dedicated, full-time Squad member to handle Flags each morning. Here’s how it will look –

  1. Price Point that are obviously wrong (say an item is not in its original box) will be done right then and there.
  2. Difficult ones will be discussed with relevant Squad Members and tried to be resolved in 24 hours.
  3. Duplicate Database Items or Subjects will be handled by Flag Squad Members that have the right expertise, we shoot for three days (these Flags are not relevant to Estimated Values, so they’re less urgent)

We appreciate the hard work of our Flag Squad, and need to offer a HUGE thank you to Flag Squad Leader Kelle Moore, aka Cerulian, who has helped develop and manage the program – and even worked on them during her vacation!

Stay tuned! We have more planned to streamline the Flag process, including the ability for Members to see their Flags and receive a notification upon their completion.

As always, we want to hear your thoughts. Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Over the past year, we’ve been working very hard on improving the price guide. As of this morning, there are now 44,723 Funko products in our database, that is not including the 6,714 Autographed Funko Pops and the 2,726 Funko-based Customs. Our goal is to continue to be as complete as possible when it comes to the entire Funko catalog.

When it comes to the Price Guide, the good news is that since there are so many new sales platforms, we no longer have to just depend on eBay for calculating the most accurate estimated values. However, we have noticed that are many more (and sad to say, better) fakes out there – either newly produced and sold for the first time or that are now on their second rotation with a collector – knowingly or unknowingly – selling it on.  We’ve also noticed that many of the Pop!s are what we like to call “aging”, where they don’t necessarily have any recent sales of mint items any longer. We’re defining guidelines around the age of a Pop! and if it makes sense to include some age-related acceptable damage if that is the only recent price point available. All of this makes the work of our Squad ever more important.

With the Funko app changing its pricing away from our Price Guide to some price feed from eBay (we have not seen an explanation of how they get generated), we have an even bigger responsibility to maintain the most accurate, non-biased Price Guide.  There is a lot of unhappiness about the Funko App in the comments on Android and Apple stores and we know this will not change  –

We are sharing our plans for the remainder of 2024 so that you know and, if you have opinions on what we should do, you can share them below.

eBay

Although eBay has become only one of our price sources, we are still committed to ensuring we are as up-to-date as possible when adding these price points. We’ve started going back through Pop!s that have not had a new Price Point added for a few months to then add recent price points (and if we cannot find any on eBay, we then search Mercari and then StockX). We also had a specific method to enter Best Offers (and sometimes Multiply Quantity sales).

Just this week we added the ability to add Comments on new Price Points or Price Points that were flagged. This helps to explain our Price Point Exceptions directly on the Price Point.  It also helps with the ever-more complex world of eCommerce.  For example, some sellers have decided to add the word “Damaged” to all of their eBay titles as it helps them to deal with often unjustified buyer complaints (if it says “New” every return – even if the item has been photographed in every detail, has to be accepted, if it says “Damaged” it is a totally different experience).

This vendor is a good example, she or he lists 4,500+ POP!s with the word Damaged Box, including a number of grails, almost all of which are in near mint or better condition, so they would be a legitimate Price Point that we would and should add to the guide.

We also plan to show removed eBay Price Points and the reasons for their removal as there are often discussions about these.

Mercari

We are looking into ways to add Mercari Price Points easier for our volunteers through a number of tools that we are working on. We also plan to add the Buyer’s Premium of 10% to the reported Price Points.

Whatnot

We have initially started with 2 Sellers  –

  1. Toycabal (but they recently stopped selling on the platform)
  2. Savage_pops is still by far the largest vendor for Funko POPs on Whatnot.

We are looking at adding new Vendors, but while there are many other channels, most of them are small to very small.  The format of video in a stream with all its giveaways and bundles does not lend itself to informed decision-making and encourages volume with low prices.  This is a problem as Estimated Values should indicate what a well-informed buyer is willing to buy from a well-informed seller.

We are continuing to experiment here and will build in some rules, for example, defining an acceptable traffic number (currently around 100 viewers per show not during give-aways).  We will continue to monitor traffic and also plan a study of the difference between pricing on Whatnot and on other channels.

StockX

Sells only a few Funko items, but is perfect for Price Points due to StockX’ guarantee that items are Mint (think of the Buyer’s Intent and Assurances – “I know I get it Mint and if not I can return it and it costs the Seller money”).

Shopify

We are getting closer to releasing our Shopify app that will allow sellers to show their listings in the PPG database but also automatically assign Near Mint or better Price Points to the database (similar to how we handle hobbyDB).

Member Estimates

Squad Members and Premium Members can now add Member Estimates.  Those show if an item has no market-based Price Point such as an eBay, Mercari or StockX Price Point.  It can however have a Retail Price (as those are not indicate of an item’s value in the secondary market).

$25,000 for this Cyndi Lauper POP?  Imagine somebody asked you the value of the Golden Ticket when we had it valued at $15,000 (there was only one reported transaction) and just before somebody paid $100,000 for it?  Estimating values for rare items is hard and an informed crowd is better at it than individuals.  Maybe this one is worth that much and that Member might have the best insights(remember that Golden Ticket later for $210,000!).  To help explain somebody’s rationale Member Estimates can now also include comments to explain one’s thinking.

If there is more than one Estimated Value we calculate it using the PPG algorithm.  Here is the Estimate Value for Cyndi with those 7 Member Estimates   –

Questions?  Feedback?  Want to get Involved?

We’re excited to embark on this journey and if you’re interested in helping us continue to be the best Funko price guide out there, we’d love to hear from you.

Have some feedback on our plan? Just tell us what you think in the Comment below.

Tom Brady has sat atop the NFL kingdom since his rookie year in 2000. The man known as TB12 is widely considered the GOAT on the football field and Funko shelves.

Since its release in 2016, the Julian Edelman, Tom Brady & Rob Gronkowski (3-Pack) has ruled all Pop! NFL figures as the most valuable. Today it has an impressive estimated PPG value of $270.

But today is no ordinary day. Today is Feb. 11, Super Bowl LVII and with Brady since retired, his 3-pack has now been dethroned.

And we’re willing to bet you know exactly which player now has the most valuable Pop! NFL figure…

The Taylor Swift Effect has come to Funko, even if her own Pop! hasn’t. Travis Kelce is now the most valuable Pop! NFL figure with an estimated PPG value of $340.

Funko’s professional sports Pop!s are unique from other Pop!s, in that estimated value, oftentimes, can be linked to performance. Read “What Happens to the Value of Your Funko Pop! Sports Figures After They’re Traded,” where we break down the correlation between pro athlete performance and the estimated value of their Funko Pop!s.

Kelce is no slouch when it comes to NFL players. The future Hall of Famer was considered among the best of all time at his position long before his relationship with the pop icon (not to be confused with Pop! Icon).

As for Kelce, however, the Kansas City Chief tight end has become a bit of an outlier. In fact, thanks to PPG’s historical charts, you can see the direct boost that his Pop! received around September when the two became romantically intertwined.

Stay tuned to see if his Pop! devalues should the power couple ever break up.

Speaking of Taylor Swift, most Swifties will likely agree that a Tay Tay Funko Pop! is long overdue. A Taylor Swift Pop! would almost certainly break all kinds of Funko sales records. Check out some Pop! Custom Taylor Swifts on PPG!
