We wrote about what makes an item fake, how to protect yourself, what are red flags etc etc.  You avoided it so far but now you bought one.  Say Jason Voorhees (Unmasked).  At a convention or on Facebook Marketplace or on eBay and you waited a few months to check properly.  You paid $650 and felt good about it until you figured out it is fake.

Here is what we want to know.  What do you?  You cannot return it you, you are out of money.  Do you?

  1. Burn it (or use a tomahawk and properly mutilate)
  2. Mark it with an indelible Sharpie as Fake and keep it as a placeholder
  3. Send it to a grading company and hope that they grade it and that it all goes away
  4. Sell it indicating it is Fake
  5. Flip it cheap indicating that you know nothing about it

Tell us about how you bought a fake, how you found out and come clean with what you did with it.  Where do all the fakes end up?

Saw this ad on the Facebook Marketplace and 80% at GameStop sounded interesting  –

Going there showed me this somewhat believable story  –

and some good deals  –

I knew this could not be true and a quick Google search found that others have come to the same conclusion  –

So be warned!  And of course, if the “powerful, extremely well-funded” SecuredStatus site can figure this out why can’t Facebook?  Are they even trying? Shame on them.

I found these on a grocery trip on our family vacation in Portugal  –

And thought since the chocolate is good why not get a few.  And yes, the chocolate was good!

So I got

  • 1 POP (these come in two parts that you have to put together)
  • 1 POP-style Pencil Topper
  • 1 Armband
  • 2 Bookmarks
  • 1 other item (a sticker of Hogwards and a colorful band)
  • 3 tiny cards

While they come with their instructions I still do not know what those cards are good for  –

As I only got one figure I was doing some internet sleuthing and found out that Harry Potter is the only series and it consists of 12 figures and some other stuff –

If you are a Funko Completist tell me more about your infliction in the comments and I might send you these items.

There they are. Standing RIGHT there! That famous celebrity you’ve adored since childhood.

Pen? Check. Item to be signed? Check. It’s go time.

Few moments in the collectibles universe are as thrilling as meeting that celeb and landing an autograph on that beloved item. The hard evidence of a lifelong dream now sealed in time. And hopefully a vinyl UV-blocking protector, as well.

When it comes to getting autographs, however, proper etiquette is always a must. Some rude fans of the WWE are finding that out the hard way.

The WWE, led by superstar Rhea Ripley, has recently taken off from the top rope when it comes to throwing pushy autograph hounds into the doghouse. Namely the ones that accost its wrestlers in airports.

Among the items commonly thrown into wrestlers’ faces by autograph seekers are Pop! WWE figures, which are quite plentiful in the Funko universe – especially autographed versions.

Check out Cactus Jack signed by Mick Foley, for example, with an estimated PPG value of $115.

You can’t say Rhea is anti-Pop! Turns out, she used to be a collector of Dragon Ball and Vegeta Pop!s! And last month, she finally had the chance to collect her very own Pop! So she can understand the fervor.

But now, the WWE star will limit what she signs and we must respect her wishes, and quite frankly, the privacy of others.

All we ask is that you use the proper decorum. Don’t spoil it for the rest of us. Don’t make us have to create a “no celebrity was harassed in securing this autograph” disclaimer.

Besides, why on God’s blue earth would you instigate someone who could submit you with a vicious Boston Crab before you could even finish muttering the name “Jimmy Superfly Snuka?”

We’d love to hear some of your celebrity autograph encounters. Let us know in the comments below!

We love our Squad Members and as we all know, hobbyDB and PPG could never be done without them. Over the years, there have been more than 2,500 great people that have helped get us to where we are. These folks live all around the world, and I’m thankful that quite a few of them have become friends. Many of them are also shareholders and I see myself working for them.

I’m pleased to say that over the years, only 8 Squad members have not been “friend” material. Some because they were not willing to follow the rules that the Squad agreed on (even after having repeatedly asked), others because they got caught manipulating prices in order to make profits. Every one of them has left in shame and was generally not heard from again (and that is why we did not post about them).

But of course, there is always a first! While we like to keep our community a positive one, we thought it was important to also be transparent with everyone and share what has happened with our most recent volunteer who had to be removed.

Patrick “Pat” Aquino is a former Volunteer Squad member who collects anime-related Pops and used to be a Contributor and Creator on the Squad. He had a history of being extremely negative in the Squad group, with loud complaints about things he disagreed with even when the matter had been settled. He also frequently made unfounded accusations of price manipulation when legitimate Price Points raised the value of an Anime Pop (and we had quite a lot of that recently as Funko prices are trending up strongly this year).

In the end, he was doing more harm than good to the Squad, so for the benefit of all of our Volunteers, we decided to kick him out. Sadly, after being removed from the Squad, he started to spread his accusations and false claims all across Facebook and Reddit. Now he claims to be a Whistleblower on price manipulations, which is obviously the furthest thing to the truth.

Somehow his statements on various Social Media just do not add up, here are some of his many recent ones  –

Luckily we have a number of systems in place to identify what he was doing in terms of rampant price manipulation and we were able to quickly kick him out. Our systems work best when we have many Squad Members (for example Funko) and less so where we do not (we could use help cleaning up Nenderoids on hobbyDB now). Keep in mind that if you join the Squad with the same intent to manipulate, you will be removed and we will tell the community about you.

Thanks to the fantastic 99.7% of our Volunteers and we love working for you. We really couldn’t do it without you.

Christian (after talking to the team)

We get and love to get lots of comments on our blog posts.  We like to hear what you think and suggest and we do not mind criticism.  There are two things that we are not fond of – (1) any name-calling or rudeness and (2) bringing up transactions that have gone bad. Those comments get not published but are normally replied to.  Here is our rationale:

  • Re (1) Life is too short for rudeness and we know from experience that once we tolerate it here on the Blog or on our Facebook Group Page it becomes worse and worse, just use your manners and if in doubt don’t post.
    —-
  • Re (2) if you had a bad transaction and think that we can help (we often cannot) then contact our Customer Service team via the green button on the Help pages.  If you had a bad experience outside PPG or hobbyDB that we cannot help, period. We don’t have the manpower or mandate for that.

I used to try to explain that to the poster of the comment and am now finally sick and tired of being accused of censorship and supporting bad forces in the hobby. Berin Szóka, the president of the nonprofit TechFreedom covers the censorship point well when he says “When Facebook bans somebody, that’s not censorship. Censorship is when the government makes a private company take something down — period, end of story”.

A good case in point was Joe Car (apparently that is his name) who said a retailer we mentioned in passing and have not ever had a commercial relationship with did not send him something he bought (not on our marketplace, a purchase made on their website). Maybe, how would we know?  When I explained that we would not publish his accusation that had nothing to do with the article he argued:

“I know your going to do what you want and you censor bad publicity got it. Very cool. Whether it was serious or not you could inquire but that doesn’t matter. I left a comment on something they are associated with. Now you’ve allowed them to get away with it. As if this comment would take away from your story. Please… looks worse that you sensor it. Should have just ignored it let them see it. Again I’ll just be sharing all this on social media. Let the followers see your true colors and morality. You know people love sensorship! Good luck” (sic)

I am sorry, but I had explained that I cannot get involved in others’ issues.  Call the Better Business Bureau for that (BTW, they charge for their services).  Then of course always the thread that the poster now published everywhere about us to “kill” PPG.  In this case, this was even followed by this:

“People have the responsibility to be whistle blowers when there is wrong doing.” (sic)

What a lot of bullshit. Now Mr. Car is a whistleblower that feels he saves Funkodom while this is really only about a purchase made and that somehow got wrong (and again one that we had absolutely nothing to do with).  Joe, I know it sucks when a transaction does not work out.  But that does not make you Socrates or Euripides with what you are doing here, it just makes you come across as an entitled internet user that is wrong.

We will now just delete these comments and not reply anymore as we should spend all of our time making PPG a better place for those that enjoy it.  Rant over…

Thinking about selling on the marketplace? Start here with our guest blog from Brianna!

Hellllooo fellow PPG’ers!

My super short background – I’m Brianna aka Dellwina (@Dellwina on instagram) and I have been collecting Funko Pop! Vinyl for about 2 years now. After collecting a ton of Pop!, having no space and deciding my collection needed direction. I began the insanely hard process of letting them go.

The reason for this blog is simple, I couldn’t decide between eBay, Amazon or the PPG Marketplace. Ultimately I chose the PPG Marketplace because it seemed like it should be the most convenient place to sell.

Well, after about 30 minutes I was beyond frustrated and almost needed a new computer. I was so ready to give up when I went straight to the source of all good reviews and opinions-Facebook. My simple yet in-depth and scathing review in the PPG Marketplace Group said, “Yeah The Marketplace really sucks”.

To my surprise, I was quickly met with a response and conversation from Marketplace Jedi Dayne, asking me why I felt so much rage. After a bit of discussion, he got me started down the right path.

Once I had the basics, listing an item was MUCH faster and easier than I first thought. Having a grasp of the marketplace made it SO SIMPLE! If only this information was in the help section. Which it will be (soon!). After I had figured it out Dayne asked, “Why don’t you write a blog about How To Sell On The Marketplace to start us off?”

The only response I could give was, “:O YES I MUST HELP ALL THE PPG’ERS OUT!” A few weeks later and badabing badaboom, I’M PUBLISHED BABY! So, without further ado, Here is my 5 step “Padawan’s Guide To The PPG Marketplace – Part 1”. I wanted to make this guide SUPER simple and helpful. I hope I succeed!

STEP 1: DON’T go to the marketplace! (YET) – First make sure you are sign into PPG! Then start within the guide itself by searching for the item you want to sell.

STEP 2: Each item has a convenient ‘Sell This Item’ button, located in both the search result and in the item detail page. (If this is your first time selling on the marketplace you will need to create a hobbyDB.com, who operates the marketplace, account.)

STEP 3: Detail YOUR listing – The next page is pretty straight forward, details! Everything from price and shipping to custom titles and condition notes. There are a lot of options on this page so make sure your listing stands out with unique images and descriptors.

TIP: If you don’t know exactly what the shipping cost will be, a great rule of thumb is about $5-7 for the first item, and $3-4 for additional items.

PRO TIP: DON’T PUT A RANGE FOR THE SHIPPING (Ex. $3-5 cannot be charged to a buyer), when you go to submit the listing, an error will stop you-adding a lot of frustration to the listings process (I learned this the hard way)

Step 4: Upload YOUR Image – This is, BY FAR, the most overlooked step and the prompt will even double remind you to upload your own images!

AWESOME PRO TIP: Many buyers find it suspicious to use a stock photo, if you have your own photo it is best practice to use it. You WILL turn away buyers or make the selling process longer for yourself using stock images.

Wait, What’s this?

SUPER AWESOME PRO TIP: This confirmation window will always appear when you click ‘List for Sale’ reminding you of the hobbyDB fees. BREATHE, 7% may seem like a lot but it’s actually cheaper than Ebay and Amazon! Don’t let Ebay take your money, and save those dollars! You earned it!

Step 5: Sell! Sell! Sell! Clicking ‘List For Sale’ and you’re done! Almost. Every item URL can be shared to Facebook for a really nice sale listing. So get out there and share it with your personal groups, or you can join and share with us in the PPG Community And Marketplace Group!

That’s all! You’re ready to get started selling on the PPG Marketplace. Stay tuned for Part 2 everyone! Expert tips and tricks.

SO did anyone else have this problem? Was it easy for you to figure the marketplace out? Did this article help you out? Did it not help? LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW! (Don’t worry, I’ll only take it slightly personally if it didn’t.)

Those of us that have around the hobby for a bit are sure to recognize the names “Fugitive Toys” and “F-Box”. For anyone unaware, Fugitive Toys does a monthly, spur of the moment, themed mystery box that, due to its popularity, is often extremely hard to acquire and sells out within minutes. Now, Funko collectors are often not shy about expressing their discontent when missing out on something they want, but with the most recent announcement from Fugitive, it’s official – “collectors” have gone too far.

Fugitive Announcement

Now, my rant. Colorful language follows.

Take a second to soak this in. Collectors made threats to employees of a company – a company trying to provide a fun surprise for collectors – and all for the reason that THEY DIDN’T GET THEIR TOYS!! Are you fucking serious? To the people that made these threats… is your life really so mundane, that this type of behavior is what justifies your existence? Are you so spoiled and/or obsessed with the acquisition piece of this hobby that you feel it gives you the right to threaten other human beings when you don’t get what you want? In what world is this acceptable?

This is a HOBBY, people. It’s supposed to be for fun. And if you have ANY experience at all in “real life,” you’ll understand that life isn’t always fair and you’re not always going to get what you want. Complaining about it in your favorite forum or Facebook group? Fine, let off some steam. But in no way, shape, or form is harassing or threatening another individual acceptable.

Thanks to the actions of a handful of spoiled, pathetic people, Fugitive is indefinitely suspending a collector event that many look forward to every month. This rant isn’t about how this affects other collectors, how a few bad apples have brought a blight on what should be am exciting event. This is about the unscrupulous disrespect shown to the employees of Fugitive Toys. These are human beings doing their jobs, people with families, hobbies and feelings, just like the rest of us. They are not your personal punching bag to unleash on when you don’t get your way.

On behalf of the Funko collecting community, I would like to apologize to everyone at Fugitive. I can assure you, we’re not all this way. If you were one of the individuals guilty of this unstable behavior, I urge you to take a minute out of your life and reevaluate why you’re in this hobby to begin with. It’s a hobby, people. Fun. Collecting. Toys. This type of shitty, self-serving behavior has no place here.
