Fans of Custom Funko Pop! figures! We’re re-introducing the popular genre back to the PPG database.

We asked you, the Pop Price Guide Community, back in July of 2020 whether or not you’d like to see us add Custom Funko Pop! figures to the database.

The majority of you did not want them on PPG, mostly because of the difficulty delineating between Customs and real Funko items. So we decided to house them solely on our partner site hobbyDB.

Now, thanks to our dedicated Dev Team, we have an improved layout and a new opportunity to display Custom Pop!s on PPG, while keeping original Funko items separate.

Customs will now have their own tab on each item, alongside the likes of Autographed and Prototypes. Take a look at Stranger Things’ Bob (in Scrubs), for example –

This is a major project and part of our strategy to show members what they want to see, and not what they don’t, so your patience while our team implements these changes is greatly appreciated.

We expect to add more and more Customs to PPG in the near future. A good example of Customs on hobbyDB can be found with Hot Wheels — with some models having up to 50 Custom variants. See an example here with this ’55 Chevy Bel Air Gasser.

We want to know what you think. Tell us in the comments below or message us at support@hobbydb.com.

Back in December we asked an artist to create an extremely limited number of custom X-23’s. Little did we know, when the idea of the commissioning a PPG custom began, what a cool story and adventure one of the custom X-23’s would be taking.

In the hours following the fervent sale of the custom X-23, we received one very cool message from a user interested in getting a hold of her for a very personal AND public collection, but she was sold out. As fate would have it, we received one return which went to collector Eric Jaskolka and is now sitting very happily amongst more than 16,000 other mutants and mutant inspired memorabilia in the Guinness World Records “Largest Collection of X-Men Memorabilia”!

When we found out where she had landed we HAD to get some pictures and the story behind Eric’s amazing collection. So, with X-23 amongst her mutant brethren, we decided to ask the human side of story.

PPG: What and when did you start collecting?

I started collecting comic books in 1989 and the toys in 1990. Uncanny X-Men #268 was my first X-Men comic.  Initially I collected only action figures and the playsets.  Around 1994 I started collecting other X-Men items and by 1999 I bought anything that had X-Men on it or related to X-Men.

PPG: Has your collection always been X-Men focused?

When I started reading comics I would buy just about any comic, but ended up focusing on X-Men.  I traded in all my non X-Men comics in the early 90’s to buy back issues of X-Men.  At the time the Death of Superman, Knightfall and all the Valiant comics had high values so I was able to get  back issues of Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, Excalibur, New Mutants and Wolverine.

PPG: Who is your favorite mutant? Hero or Villain

Wolverine is by far my favorite, I also like Magneto.  Well, I guess Magneto when you think about him is not really a villain.  I do like the way Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse are written as villains as well.

PPG: We’ve all thought about it, so what is your hypothetic superpower?

Speed, I am a runner and am always pushing myself to go faster.  I would like the Flash’s powers.

PPG: When did you decide that you wanted to have the world’s largest X-Men collection and how long did it take you to get recognized in Guinness as having such a large and amazing collection?

I did not have aspirations to have the world’s largest collection, I just enjoyed collecting X-Men.  In 2012, after about 23 years of collecting X-Men, I looked at my collection and the size of it and wondered what does it take to have the largest collection and is there such a thing.  So I contacted Guinness and they did not have a record for X-Men, they had Batman, Superman and Spider-Man but no X-Men.  In June 2012 I submitted my paperwork and in early September 2012 I received my certificate in the mail.  That was my first notification that I had won, it was pretty awesome to hold the certificate in my hand and then see my name on their website.

PPG: What is your favorite item in your collection? And of course, which is your favorite by Funko?

That is a tough question, like which is your favorite child!!  I have several favorite items but one of my earliest items is a prototype of an unreleased action figure playset line from Hornby which is based in the UK, this is from 1990.  It is a Wolverine figure in a playset fighting a cardboard Wendigo.  Marvel ended up aligning with ToyBiz and made Pocket Comics  My favorite Funko item is Pop! Sabretooth and Archangel figures.  Funko did a really nice job of taking these somewhat menacing looking characters and making them look cute and innocent.

PPG: Do you remember the first non-comic book item you got as “A Collector”? How about your first piece of Funko?

The first item other than the comics was the first series of X-Men ToyBiz action figures in 1990.  My first Funko item were the X-Men Wacky Wobblers in 2008, that series at Magneto, Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine in is yellow blue costume and the exclusive Wolverine in brown costume.

PPG: What is your favorite collectible brand/manufacturer? (You don’t have to say Funko haha. We are actually hoping to add some other brands to the guide and think it’d be great to be featuring other collectible brands).

Wow that is a tough question because I have so many cool things.  I like the detail and art of the Bowen statues and mini-busts; I like Minimates due to the large variety of characters made, I like a lot of the small collectibles lines like BoonkaZonks, Nog’nz, Beanz, Squinkies, Chibis and Marvel Dice figures because they are low cost and fun designs.  Of course the original ToyBiz figures that started it all are included as favorites.  Funko is doing a great job with the Dorbz, Pop’s and minis.  I like when a brand/manufacturer makes many characters so you can have a variety vs making many versions of Wolverine. While Wolverine is my favorite I do think there is way too much merchandise of that character when there are so many other cool characters like Storm, Gambit and Rogue that don’t get enough merchandise made.

Eric was featured in another great article showcasing his collecting on the Guinness World Record site, including a really great video interview. Let us know what you think about this amazing collection!

It’s time for another Custom Corner segment and this time we had a chance to ask the talented Ruthie Rhodes (or @dustandpages as some of you may know her) a few questions about what it’s like in the world of customizing!

Cath from Heartless by Marissa Meyer

When did you first start customizing Funko figures?

My very first custom was of a character from a very popular YA series called Throne of Glass. Her name is Manon Blackbeak and she’s a human-killing, heartless, witch-coven leader and naturally my favorite character of the series. I think I made her in November of 2016. The community I’m a passionate member of (besides the Funko community) on Instagram is called ‘Bookstagram’ and when I started       photographing the few customs I had made at that point, things just took off from there. I ended up doing several customs of my favorite characters and then decided to start doing it full time.

What has been the most difficult custom so far?

The one I’m working on now. It’s the main character, Kvothe, from The Kingkiller Chronicles. It’s very detailed and I’m making a case on his back with a removable lute, and also trying to sculpt a wind funnel of leaves. It involves a lot of different materials which can sometimes be difficult but I think always make for really interesting figures.

Since most of the characters that I create are from books, I do a lot of reading (no complaints here).

Do you have a particular piece that you’re especially proud of?

Link. He turned out even better than what I had pictured in my head which is always a good feeling. It probably also helps that The Legend of Zelda is my favorite video game series. I love all of the little details like his chain mail, his sword, and shield. The same customer commissioned Zelda which I can’t wait to get started on.

Link from The Legend of Zelda

Where do you draw inspiration from to create your customs?

Since most of the characters that I create are from books, I do a lot of reading (no complaints here). I also look at a ton of fan art for characters that have been depicted previously, but sometimes it’s just up to my own imagination. I’ll write down key elements of each character (clothing, hairstyle, eye color, personality, tokens they carry, their weapons, etc.) as I’m reading (or more often than not listening on audio) then make a quick sketch of what I think they should look like in pop form. Thankfully most authors are kind enough to go into great detail about clothing choices otherwise my life might be a little more difficult.

Are there any characters you would like to attempt to create in the future?

I have a few that I’m dying to do! I want to tackle a few more beasts from Harry Potter like Fawkes, a swooping evil, one of the merpeople, or a cornish pixie, the Hocus Pocus trio, and two from different scenes in Friends that just make me happy.

Buckbeak from the Harry Potter series

Which of your customs (or series) that Funko hasn’t yet produced would you like to see on shelves someday?

My first instinct is to say they need to make Pop! Books but then I might be out of a job! But hey if Funko wants to hire me for that I’d be first in line. Really though, they NEED to make the Mario collection of characters. Or I guess I should say Nintendo NEEDS to give up that license already. I know myself and about a million+ others would love them, especially since most of us Pop collectors grew up with those games.

There have been times I wanted to flip my table over when I first started

Do you have any advice for aspiring customisers?

Research, don’t give up, and don’t steal others work. There have been times I wanted to flip my table over when I first started because my sealant was sticky from underbaked clay or incompatibility with paint. Learn from mistakes and strive to make the next one better. Also, make friends in the community! Even a small amount of outside support can make a really bad day so much better and I’ve found the customizer community to be so supportive!

What is the best place for people to approach you for customs?

Either my Etsy storefront or through email (dustandpagescustoms@gmail.com) are the best places, but I also have an Instagram (@dustandpages) and a Facebook page which I am on regularly.

So there you have it! Thanks to Ruthie for taking the time to answer our questions. Don’t be shy, go check out her social media pages to see more of her wonderful creations!

We asked them a few questions to learn a little bit more about them and their work which you can check out below.

How did you first get into customizing Pops?

We first started making customs as personal projects.  Certain characters that we wanted, were simply not made, so we decided to make our own.  We posted our customs online and got a lot of positive feedback and people wanting to buy them.  So, we decided to do limited numbers of each custom that we create!  Most of them are between 10 and 20 pieces and once we are sold out, we never make any more.

Do you both share the work load, do you each have different tasks when it comes to creating these customs?

We basically share the workload, when we get some free time we work on them.  When we learn a new technique, we both make sure to take the time to learn it.  We usually take a day or two to learn new things together, it’s just more fun like that, rather than getting stuck only being good at certain things.

Can you tell us a little about the tools you use or the process before you tackle a new design?

One of our biggest tools would have to be that we both have a bachelor’s degree in digital media.  This allowed us to jump right into 3D printing with little learning curve.  We recently purchased a 3D printer and now we can make our ideas on the computer and print them out.  This is a lot faster for us than using clay/sculpting material. When creating a design on the computer, we can go back and edit it if we aren’t happy with the design.  If we had to do that with clay, we would have to start over.

If you had to choose one, what is your favorite custom you have made so far?

Choosing one is a tough choice, since we don’t accept commissions and make ones we want personally.  We’re going to choose two though, since there are two of us.

The first one would have to be Earthworm Jim, he was one of the most fun to do, and he brings back a lot of good childhood memories we have together.  He had a unique design, and transferring that to pop form was a fun task.

The second is Turnip Head, we only made one of him, and he was the most difficult custom that we had to do.  He is 50% 3D printed and the rest are Pop parts pieced together.

You are clearly huge DC fans, can you tell us how that began?

It stemmed from our childhood.  Every week we would watch Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League Animated Series, and Superman The Animated Series.  It just snowballed from there.  We enjoy Marvel too, though. They both have their pros and cons.

Are there any characters you’d love to create in the future or any teases for upcoming projects you can give?

We have a lot of characters planned, we’re not sure when we will get around to them, though.  We’re working on a few right now that are going to be gifts for friends, so we don’t want to ruin the surprise. Here is one teaser though, we will be making a set that will be posted on Black Friday!

What advice would you give to those looking to dabble in customs?
Take your time on the design of the Pop and look for the perfect Pop pieces.  Always try to get a second opinion of an honest person when you are making it.  It is always good to get feedback on a design.  We have a group of friends that give us input and they let us know when things don’t look great, and we can change the design. One of the main things we learned in school was that you need to be able to take criticism if you are going to improve.
Where is the best place for people to contact you regarding your customs?

The best place to contact us would be on Instagram @theegamertwins.
You can also look us up on Facebook under Twin Customs, we don’t post on Facebook as often though.

You can check out several customs from @theegamertwins in the gallery below! And be sure to check out their Instagram page.

Perhaps one of JPOPS’ most well known lines is it’s X-Men series. They started off with a release of Deadpool vs. Cable.

My Spider-sense is tingling for this one. Welcome back to another review of custom pop pieces by yours truly. Today, I’m going to look at one of my favorite Marvel character Spiderman. This custom Pop! statue is wonderfully made by Valkyrie Statues. I managed to chance upon this piece through a local selling app and was very interested in getting one since it was so irresistible.

Although Valkyrie Statues made 2 different pieces based on Spiderman (the other piece will be shown at the end of the review), I was only interested in getting the one that was based off the original Sideshow comiquette. This was my first time purchasing from the new entrant to the custom Pop! scene and I was glad that I took a step of faith to purchase this.

spidermansidesho2 spidermansideshow spidermansideshow3  spidermansideshow4 spidermansideshow5

The piece that I received was altered from the actual production piece because I was using this piece for review. I was glad that they were able to accommodate my request (after much begging~!!!) as I’m usually quite picky on what I choose to purchase for my custom Pops!

differencedifference2

As you can look at the photos, the walls have been painted to look dirtier than the usual. I chose this because it resembled the paint job that was closer to the original statue. If you can look closer, you will notice the white parts were also painted to look more stained.

IMG_5234 IMG_5231 IMG_5230 IMG_5227 IMG_5226

I managed to have a chat with Valkyrie Statues and asked them what they felt was the most difficult part of making this piece. They replied that the most difficult part was reposing Spiderman in a non-conventional way, which included bending backwards with an oversized Funko Pop! head.

IMG_5228IMG_5232

One thing that came to a surprise to me was the amount of details at the back of the statue. What was not pictured in their production shots but was good for the piece was that they also managed to replicate the same parts of the original statue, which was the walls and the rusted steel plank at the back. Valkyrie Statues mentioned that this was a dilemma during their creation process. Considering that this was a small figure, they did not know if more details would spoil the outlook of the statue, or would the minimalist feel be more beneficial to the collectors. They decided to run with their instincts and chose to follow closely to the original statue and I’m sure it paid off because I’m sure those who purchased it will surely appreciate this aspect of the piece.

Here’s a bonus for you process junkies who wants to take a look at their creative process. Here you’ll see how Valkyrie Statues reposed a diy pop to bend backwards then moulded the posture with epoxy clay

spideyprocess6spideyprocess5spideyprocess4spideyprocess2spideyprocess3spideyprocess

One of the many workmanship things that many of us look out for a custom pop piece is the cleanliness and smoothness of the paint. I was really blown away by the way the piece was painted. In most of the custom pops I’ve ever had the chance to take a look, you can usually feel certain roughness or areas that have uneven bumps that might make some of us go crazy. However, the paintwork on this piece was so well done that I couldn’t find a single part that I was unhappy about (trust me, I have a very high standard for paintwork).

One of the things that I wish happened that could make the piece better was to make the eyes closer to the Miles Morales or the Iron Spiderman pop. I understand that they wanted to make the eyes as close to the original Spiderman Pop but I was just thinking how awesome it would be to have the eyes widened to stay closer to the look and feel of how the comics portrayed the iconic web slinger’s eyes.

Thanks for staying with me till the end and to conclude, I’ll show some pictures of the alternate piece that Valkyrie Statues did. You can see their social media links below and I can’t wait for their upcoming Marvel piece (Hint: It’s really hot)

I know there was a movie made about him that some of us might want to forget (*cough, Nicholas Cage, cough*) but when we come to know his story, it’s actually quite interesting. This underrated character matches his Pop! prices which, has never been astronomically high until now since he is “retired” and is catching up with other similar priced pops that we are all too familiar with. Honestly, I wasn’t much of a Ghost rider fan till I saw this monster of a piece.

The process for creating customs has been one of my interests since collecting Pops! and I’m always curious what it takes to create these wonderful pieces of custom Pops. I decided to ask Carlo Wendell Lacsamana Gomez who is the amazing customiser from iGeek Customs further on what the process is like in creating this particular piece. Carlo was gracious enough to allow me to do this article about him.

On the concept of this idea, Carlo felt that the Ghost Rider and his iconic Hellcycle were always pictured side by side however he felt that Funko was never gonna produce this and decided to do this on his own. Carlo searched around for different interpretation of the concept of this Pop! He finally settled for one of the recent statue makers who has gained much fame for their paintwork and ideas, XM studios.

Enough talk! Now for the process junkies turn. I felt that was one of the biggest things that drew me to this custom was it’s huge translucent flaming head. The details and the way it was sculpted must have taken a long time just to get it right. I have never seen any custom head sculpted this good just yet. Carlo explains that he used a DIY pop and sculpted the face close to the original figure. One difference he pointed out was to give the head a little more attitude by sculpting an open mouth and to extend the flames of his head for that extra menacing look. The flames on his head is made up of clear resin material, and painted with clear acrylic toner.

Next we move on to Ghost Rider’s Hellcycle. Carlo had an inspiration for this part of the custom when he saw a 1:18 scale toy bike from one of his toys that resembles a bullet type bike, he then carried on to make some adjustments on the look and sculpted the flame effect.

One thing that usually makes customs or statues interesting is the base of the figure. If this custom Pop! already wasn’t awesome enough. It actually has a base that can be lit up  just by shining a light source from the bottom. Through the years, Carlo has sculpted big statues mostly 1:4 scale that comes with this lighted effect. Gathering from his experience, he applied that knowledge on the base of the Ghost Rider. I must say that this is something that didn’t need to be factored in but it was done nevertheless from someone who just wants to give the best to people.

I would like to end with the box that he produced. This box if you try to peek real close, you would be able to see bits of the comic strips from Ghost Rider inside the box. This is of course something that Funko will not do but some of us can dream.
