Since his childhood Guillermo del Toro was a fan of comics and classic horror cinema, and loved to sculpt his own play-dough monster figures. As a result, Del Toro’s work has been characterized by a strong connection to fairy tales and horror.
As a teenager he had a large comic and book collection that has grown to some 9,000 items nowadays. His collection also includes roughly 500 amazing memorabilia articles related to horror and science fiction movies, highlighting real size statues of Frankenstein and his Bride, Jason and the Argonauts and a bust of Regan from the Exorcist.
Lucky for us, in 2016, he organized the exhibition “Bleak House” to share his treasures with the fans. The show took place in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Toronto, Mexico DF, Barcelona, Paris, and New York and showed an important part of his private collection.
Considering his work as director, scriptwriter, producer, and writer, we find a long list of characters related to him in the world of Funko, from Pop!, Legacy Collection, Vynl., Dorbz, Soda and Mystery Minis.
So, I decided to choose some of my favorites for this review.
In 2014, coinciding with the worldwide premiere, Funko launched the figures from The Book of Life, where we can find some very hard to find items, not only for La Muerte #94 Pop! Movies on its common and glow versions, but also for Manolo #1 from Funko Legacy Collection. In this movie, the director from Guadalajara got involved as producer.
A year later, the characters from The Strain took shape as Pop! Television vinyl figures. This amazing, co-authored work between Del Toro and Chuck Hogan started with a trilogy of novels (2009–2011), later adapted into a comic-book series (2011–2015) and finally a live-action television series (2014–2017).
Although it would be great seeing Quintus in the catalog of Funko, at least we have the Pop!s of The Master and Professor Abraham Setrakian, both are must-have to Del Toro’s fans.
Following in 2015, the beautiful mind of this Mexican genius, surprised us again with Crimson Peak, a gothic romance film starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, and Tom Hiddleston. Some of the characters were presented as Pop! Movies figures that year, and in my humble opinion the most remarkable is Mother Ghost #217.
Particularly, as a collector and as a fan, 2018 and 2019 were the most relevant years, just because Funko released some of the most important characters of his filmography, from Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and The Shape of Water (2017).
Besides, we also found his very own Pop! It could be just a coincidence or maybe Funko did on purpose, I don’t know, but Guillermo del Toro’s Pop! has the number #666, so it could be a small tribute for this contemporary monster creator.
The first Sodas were presented in 2021, so it won’t be strange seeing more Funko’s collectibles from del Toro’s universe in the short term, considering the upcoming film Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022) and it would be delightfully seeing new vinyl figures from past movies such as Pacific Rim (2013) or Mimic (1997).
